Vertex was commissioned by Proton OnSite to review the current Nitrogen & Zero Air Generators and propose a more cost effective solution.
Proton was using the same enclosure design for both generators. We were asked to redesign the enclosure and convert is from a metal construction to Plastic.
Our design and engineering team designed the unit to be made from Injection molded plastic parts and with only 2 new plastic parts we were able to achieve this new light weight enclosure.
By converting the parts to plastic, we were able to reduce the unit overall weight by 60% and overall cost was reduced by 50%.
We designed the units in such away, that in the assembly line, most parts are common between the two versions. With small additions, assembly can switch between Zero Air Generator to Nitrogen Generator.
In addition, our engineering team, converted pressure tanks which were very expensive to make, to a custom made Aluminum extrusion & die cast construction. With a clever design, we were able to have one extrusion design fit two separate application.
"We have used Avi for a couple of cost reduction focused design activities and I have been very impressed with his ability to execute the tasks as well as integrate well with our engineering team. He brings common sense recommendations, listens well to the needs of the product and moves quickly to provide input. We will certainly use him again in the future."
