Vertex’s teams had the challenge of creating a medical device unit, which can be used in a hospital and a home environment.
The objectives were to design a device and a proprietary toothbrush to help bedridden patients maintain healthy, oral hygiene conditions.

Our design and engineering teams had to design the unit to work with a unique custom designed disposable cartridge, to hold the washing and cleaning mouthwash, and any potential antibiotic treatment solutions. At the same time, a method had to be devised to collect any waste resulting from the treatment.

We designed the system in such away, that a patient can be laying on his/her back, and wash the mouth with liquids without the risk of choking or gagging on the liquid.

Cross contamination from patient to patient, was one of the most challenging tasks to resolve. We did so by developing a proprietary disposable cartridge with filtering and check valves to avoid such contamination.
