Intent on preserving dark skies over wind farms at night, Laufer Wind has developed a radar-activated obstruction lighting system.
The ADSS is designed to balance FAA lighting regulations for aviation safety, with the nuisance light concerns of local communities.

Vertex's responsibility was to design this large Aluminum cast housing to protect sensitive electronics detection system to withstand severe weather conditions and dramatic temperatures fluctuations. The system is designed to balance FAA obstruction lighting requirements placed on wind farms, with the nuisance light concerns of local communities – one of the key impediments to wind energy development in the United States. Vertex also developed the custom PCB design to work with off the shelf antenna receivers which are also housed in this unit.
